"Uncle Tom's Cabin" & I

From: "Debby Rosenthal"

Date: 9 Jul 2014

Subject: Update on our collection about Uncle Tom's Cabin

To: "Behrooz Gharibpour"

...I wanted to tell you the good news that the book that will feature my essay about your work has been accepted. The book will be published by the University of Michigan Press, a very prestigious press! I am attaching the official letter that outlines the book. Also, you will see that the readers for the press mention my essay about your work. One reader writes, "it is also heartening to see a substantial proportion of attention devoted to the Middle East (Einboden, Rosenthal)." So this is wonderful news!...

All the best,

Debby

Sa’adi Opera

Twenty three years ago, I was robbed of my manuscripts and reference books for “Step by step with Puppet Shows” right from within my parked car. Though it took me over two years to rewrite a whole new book, I didn’t learn enough from this bitter event unfortunately and just last Ramadan, I experienced a similar stupid robbery once again! This time, when they stole my care along with the briefcase which had libretto of Sa’adi Opera in it, I noticed that apart from any other cause such as social insecurity, how careless I myself have been in both of these misfortunate cases. The lesson for me here was never ever carry my papers like that any more and I hope this was the last time I pay so heavily for being neglectful. Of course there were weird experiences for me in both robberies. For example, in the first case, my persistence in following the story through the legal system, helped me think of a puppet character I later named “Mr. Detective 2”. The modest life of police detectives I met those days gave me the idea of writing and directing a puppet show with the same title an its sequel, “Mickey & Mr. Detective 2” afterwards. This personality talked about virtues on a relative basis generally. His mentor was “Mr. Detective 1” and “Mr. Detective 2” just played second fiddle while he was around. After losing his role model upon a sudden death, “Mr. Detective 2” chose to keep the same title, believing it was not grades, medals and awards which reflected true value of one’s work and shaped respective results! In the recent case, anxiously looking for my stolen car and texts, it came to me to deeply overlook Sa’adi’s life and experiences as a whole, focusing on his wise philosophies talking about how fragile one’s wealth, authority, and position really are. I won’t carry my notes with me and will carefully keep them in a safe place for sure. In the mean time, I found out more than ever that there lies a lesson in every single event of our life. That was how I wrote Sa’adi for the second time for about a year, with a new approach this time. In the days Sa’adi was in Baghdad, he observed the fall of a great caliph upon Mongols destroying raid. This lead him to create his famous eulogy for the late Abbasid Caliph. Over the centuries, several critics, including Jalal Al-e-ahmad and Ali Shariati, have blamed him for this poem of his; but I have personally lived his life and strongly believe he quite well knew how unstable everything is and this work was not done to win a prize for him by any means.

Beware of the ups and downs of life; no one even dreamed of such a revolution - The greatest kings have all gone and no sign of their glories is left - Life is similar to a tough mill stone during the time we have been no more than simple grains to be ground by it!

I wish there comes a day when Sa’adi Opera is on stage and there and then I could proudly show new horizons of his thoughts to the willing audience who are in love with our ancient literature and philosophies. I’m sure even Sa’adi’s most serious fans haven’t paid enough attention to this attractive side of his existence!
